This is why expertise is a thing. You can generally trust people who are experts in a field to give you the most reasonable interpretation.

It's not fool-proof, the more politically involved things are the more corruption there is, but generally they're going to give you the best conclusions based on the information available.

So, for instance, nobody at any level wanted Covid to exist. Covid was a giant wrench in the world's economy and totally screwed up a lot of things. So when they come out and say Covid is real and a problem, you can trust they are being truthful because it's not good for anybody.

You are assuming people in power care about the world economy being screwed up and people dying.

Yes.

But government officials and TV executives are not on par with specialists like dentists and doctors. And even with the professionals in my life, if someone can truly prove that they are not trustworthy in some way, I am willing to listen.

Who do you think works for agencies like the CDC? They ARE specialists in their respective fields. I agree that we shouldn't trust POLITICIANS which is why it's important to have the media, in collaboration with experts, verify the stuff they say.

The people in power absolutely care about the economy being screwed up. You realize that even the people in power need to buy things right?

And government officials and TV executives can harm you just as well, only in different ways.

Or you know, scientists and policy experts are doing the best with the information they have to make the best decisions for the most people. I tend to trust people who have dedicated their lives to a particular scientific discipline, similarly, if I wanted the opinion of an idiot, I come read what PaRDians who have dedicated their lives to being idiots are thinking.

You realize that people in power can still have things when the economy is in shambles, right?

PaRD has been genuinely useful in terms of understanding how idiots think. I have, my whole life, tended to dismiss idiots. Trump made me realize I need to pay more attention to them since the vast majority of people are idiots about things they are personally invested in. Nib, Sunny, Void, and many others have helped me bridge that gap and gain a level of understanding I didn't have before.

Scientists, maybe. Policy experts (which is a euphemism for politicians)? No.

I believe most politicians are only trying to enrich themselves. They don't care about making the best decisions for the most people.

Sure, but it's way harder and you won't have nearly as much of it. When the people who keep you in power become unhappy you tend to lose your power. Even Putin has people he has to keep happy or he will be replaced. There is no such thing as absolute power, and economic prosperity is a great way to stay in power because it gives you more resources to distribute to your keys to power.

Policy experts are rarely, if ever, politicians.

So what if scientists trust the policy experts, or agree with the decisions they're making? Or what if the scientists are the policy experts?

We are getting off topic.

The issue isn't how people in power can lose their power when the economy is bad. It's when you said that people are responding to covid because it does bad things to the masses, and I am telling you that I simply don't believe that. I simply don't believe that people in power care about us. And if it sometimes seems like they do, it's only because they want to avoid an uprising.

Interesting. So what is the difference between the two?
