"It almost destroyed his presidency"
How fucking stupid. He barely lost, appointed more judges than anybody else, and never faced any consequences. He barely lost his reelection and it can be blamed almost entirely on the pandemic for his slim loss. For fucks sake he survived two impeachment attempts handily. If anything the absolute lack of consequences for firing Comey gave him the absolute green light to keep going.
That he was able to recover from the Mueller probe doesn't mean that this step didn't stagger his presidency for quite some time. Also, you're incorrectly discounting the amount of institutional opposition to Trump's presidency that was triggered by the Comey firing.
And even if you don't accept my phrasing of 'Comey' having "almost destroyed" his presidency, which might admittedly have been a bit hyperbole, the other thing I said is undisputable: that the Mueller probe had a long-lasting debilitating effect on Trump's presidency.
Talking about dishonest and/or insubstantial arguments: bringing up his second impeachment, which was held after he had left office and concerned events which took place after he already lost his reelection bid, is a textbook example.
And last but not least, the fact that he barely lost reelection is not proof that his position was allegedly unphased by Comey/the Mueller probe - no, above everything else, it is proof for how extremely shitty and toxic Democrats have become. If your side needs its strongest available candidate plus a campaign during which absolutely everything broke your way plus Big Tech tipping the scales in your favor plus well-timed race riots and you then still have to be bailed out by a
pandemic ex machina, all just so you can
barely defeat the "worst, most incompetent, corrupt, dishonest and cruel president in history", what does that say about your side?
