The fact that all other nations refused to aid them during their great famine due to ideological reasons has made them pretty insular. They know the world hates them due to this past.

Do you even realize that China has always been insular, in the past trading with them was very hard and that they literally fought opium wars with the British in an effort to kick merchants out, we're talking Qing dynasty here not communism https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opium_Wars

in any case i'd say the days of insulated China are gone, and were just a function of all sides war of the asian nations of the past when they had to fear invasion by Japan, Korea, Mongolia, and just about everyone.

a trait common to most asian countries, given the rich history of asian wars. no people are more racist by nature than asians because of this insulated history.

but i still maintain china's days of wanting insulation are done, and have been for some time. they still want to centralize the wealth in china, but they're ready for full on globalism in regards to trade.
