The term isn't intrinsically racist but there are a lot of racists who use it in a demeaning manner instead of solely referring to where the virus came from - especially in this day and age with Trumpers.

the Spanish flu did NOT come from Spain and yet it is called the Spanish flu. why? because at the time when the flu first began spreading, Spain was the only country to report it. so it "seemed" to come from there.

covid-19 should be called the Chinese virus, and rightfully so

you cannot blame this fact for leading to attacks on asians.. it is entirely these perpetrator's fault, not the fact itself

don't be stupid. please. you're completely missing the point. i agree there's nothing inherently wrong about naming a disease after the region it likely came from. however, it's not like "china / chinese virus / flu" was a name that the disease got "naturally". it's not like people were calling it that anyway. no, it was commonly known as "corona" or "covid(-19)" before conservatives tried to actively re-brand it, predictably leading to increased anti-asian sentiments, which is where bigotry comes in. it was a deliberate decision, an extra effort they made to stoke mistrust and division, as famously illustrated by this photo taken of a trump press conference, where the speech writer used the commonly used term, and trump (or stephen miller) "corrected" it to make it more divisive:
