Newsom the History-Maker

For 170 straight years, California’s population grew. Last year, we’ve just learned, it shrank by 182,000 people. Congratulations to Gavin Newsom on making history.

For Newsom, dubious history-making has become routine. Yesterday, he rolled out the "largest economic recovery package in state history," a $100 billion “California Comeback Plan.”

Other states, of course, don’t need a comeback plan. They’ve been “back” for some time. Florida, which ended all COVID restrictions and banned vaccine passports, continues to vastly outperform California by any measure: education, the economy, and public health.

As the shiniest object in his “recovery” package, Newsom is dangling $600 checks. Politico’s headline summed it up: “Newsom wants to hand out cash before California recall election.”

It’s the classic playbook of corrupt regimes: massively overtax people, squander the proceeds through graft, and return small sums as a “gift” at opportune times. Even Gray Davis’ top operative says Newsom is “playing Santa Clause.”

But what kind of a “recovery” does Newsom have in mind, anyway? He forecasts 8.5 percent unemployment for this entire year and says jobs in California won’t return to pre-COVID levels until 2025. That’s apparently his definition of “roaring back.”

Even as some businesses and schools now “open,” the reality is Help Wanted signs and Zoom in a Room. For Newsom, such malaise is the new normal; he sees this as the beginning, not the end, of a deepening cycle of dependence and control.

But that's simply not in our character. I still believe in the promise of California. I believe the essential dynamism, independence, and daring of this state will overcome the endemic cronyism, incompetence, and erring of this governor.

In fact, I believe Newsom will soon be leaving office after the shortest tenure of any California Governor since the 1800s. At least he can say he made history one last time.

Support the fight for California's future

The Big Lie

I will never support any candidate for any office who propagated the Big Lie that opening schools was unsafe.

It’s been propagated in California like nowhere else. Biden’s Education Department just reported we have the fewest fourth graders in school full-time: 5 percent. Across all grades, we’ve lagged behind every state throughout the last year: 50th out of 50.

Who, specifically, is accountable for the Big Lie? Here’s who to start with:

Gavin Newsom. There may not be a person in the United States more culpable than Newsom, whose biggest campaign donor is teachers’ unions. Last Fall, he was one of only five governors to force schools to close; this Spring, he was the only West Coast governor not to make them open. All the while, Newsom had no problem “endangering” his own kids at a private school. He then added another lie, claiming they were in “Zoom school.”

Tony Thurmond. The State Superintendent, whom teachers’ unions spent $13 million installing, has peddled the Big Lie at every turn. When I cross-examined him last October, he tipped his hand that the plan was to keep schools closed the entire year or longer, breathlessly citing “new data” that “COVID could be with us well beyond 2021.”

The Legislature: It's never questioned the Big Lie. After my “Killing our Kids for Nothing” speech in March, it rejected my Amendment to open schools immediately.

Education Committee Chairs. The Assembly Chair has refused to allow even a vote on my bills to reopen schools and fund students directly, has tried to mute my microphone, and has denied public comment. The Senate Education Chair just insanely proposed that distance learning continue "into the fall and possibly further."

School Boards: After keeping schools closed this whole year, LA and SF Unified are now scamming the state for millions in extra funding with fake re-openings. SF will let two high schools offer in-person “supervision” once a week; LA has set up a Kafkaesque “Zoom in a Room” for 7 percent of students. It’s time to consider disbanding these farcically corrupt districts.

It’s also, of course, time to oust this historically corrupt Governor. Newsom recently tried to minimize the tragedy of learning loss by calling it "unfinished learning." Perhaps he's hoping we'll refer to his Recall loss as an unfinished term.

Help me fight the lies and corruption

How We'll Win the Recall

I started this blog almost a year ago. Of the 60,000 people who’ve subscribed, many are Republicans. Many are also Democrats or Independents. I just received a contribution from a woman who’s made one other political donation in her life – to Bernie Sanders.

What’s striking is that such a diverse readership can agree on so much: That California needs fundamental change. That corruption is ruining our state. That Gavin Newsom embodies all that is wrong with politics.

This agreement, it turns out, extends to the entire California electorate: 68 percent identify as middle-of-the-road or conservative. 58.3 percent want to ditch Newsom by at least next year. 63 percent say their kids will be worse off than they are. 53 percent are thinking of moving out.

What’s even more telling, in recent PPIC and Berkeley IGS surveys, is the level of agreement on specific issues:

87 percent of Californians say the quality of education is a problem; just 31 percent think Newsom is doing a good job addressing it.

90 percent say housing affordability is a problem; a mere 13 percent say Newsom is doing a good job.

Homelessness is cited as the state’s biggest problem, and only 13 percent say Newsom is doing a good job; 57 percent say he’s doing a poor job.

81 percent say taxes are too high and 78 percent say this is driving out people and businesses.

82 percent say poverty is a problem and only 3 percent say the gap between rich and poor is narrowing.

87 percent and 81 percent say wildfires and the water supply are problems; Newsom’s approval is underwater on both issues.

In short, everyone agrees on the problems. What not everyone realizes is these problems have the same underlying cause: political corruption.

Our Capitol is completely run by Special Interests that use the powers and revenues of government to enrich themselves at the expense of everyone else. Politicians like Newsom simply do as they instruct.

Because California’s problems share this common cause, they cry out for a common solution: restoring integrity to public life. This is the only remedy to bring our ailing body politic back to health.

A winning Recall campaign will be about one thing and about everything: ending corruption and restoring good government. It will focus the public attention while broadening the public imagination: removing America’s worst governor and unleashing the full potential of its greatest state.

This is why I became the only California politician to refuse all funding from Special Interests, forgoing hundreds of thousands of dollars every election. That money has destroyed integrity in government. And no one gets more of it – or is more corrupted by it – than Gavin Newsom.

Help me restore government by the people

California's "Neanderthal" Governor

Joe Biden uses the term “Neanderthal” to describe governors who don’t follow the advice of the CDC. That now includes the Governor of California.

Gavin Newsom says that while he doesn’t dispute the CDC’s new guidance dispensing with masks, he will nevertheless ignore it. At this point, he's no longer even pretending to care about "science."

I’m calling on Newsom to stop defying the CDC and to immediately end the statewide mask mandate. A society that forces citizens to hide their faces for no reason has truly become dystopian.

I’m also calling on the Legislature to pass ACR 46, my Resolution to end all COVID restrictions and terminate this “State of Emergency” once and for all.

Finally, I’m calling on the Legislature to pass AB 367, my bill to stop Newsom from imposing vaccine passports. A new poll shows a vast majority of Californians support my proposal, with only a third in favor of a government passport system.

Yet Newsom says he "continues to watch and see how these technologies can be used.” He's clearly trying to extend the worst features of the COVID era as long as he can, perhaps indefinitely. It's more important than ever that we stop him.

Support my efforts to stop Newsom
