Also minor scandal involving the CDA and the two people responsible for exploring options for a coalition (D66 minister Ollongren and VVD ex-minister Jorritsma). When Ollongren left the meetings in The Hague some of the notes were visible, which mentioned the no. 2 of CDA, Pieter Omtzigt. Written down was: "Position Omtzigt, function elsewhere". Omtzigt has been a highly valued member of Parliament, on his own got preference votes worth 5 seats for his party. And the CDA had been leaking that he had been emotionally unstable and other nasty stuff as well. The reason the CDA elite aren't as big a fan is because he is critical of government even when the CDA is in the coalition. Which is exactly the point of Parliament, to control the executive power of the government. Now there will be a debate on what was said and why, and especially who wanted Omtzigt out of sight. Going to be interesting to see if people will talk.
Now there's new juicy details. Especially concerning VVD leader Rutte. In an interview Rutte was asked if he had mentioned Omtzigt during the talks he attended with those who are exploring coalition options. He denied that. With the debate today, new information came after Parliament requested it. Full details and notes of all talks during exploration were published.
In the notes for the talks with Rutte, it mentioned the position of Omtzigt. Now that's a big one. Rutte caught lying and now he's the one who has to defend that. In the notes it mentioned making Omtzigt a minister, but even that would be a win win for Rutte, as that would mean Omtzigt can no longer criticize the government from the side of opposition.
Today in the debate, Rutte has been mercilessly assaulted with speeches. Nothing he has said but "I didn't lie, I forgot I talked about Omtzigt.", which is pretty weak.
In my opinion, this is a symptom of Rutte's way of doing politics. A man who shuns transparency, dislikes openness of documents, and has managed to let many a scandal slide off his back. The Dutch Teflon Don.
Very little chance of this having no consequences for Rutte, as in this case, there is a clear line from the information to him.
