I follow a lot of centrist or center-left political people on Twitter and I'm not sure any of them were Cuomo fanboys. The contrast between the governor of the state suffering the most from COVID who appeared to be competent and transparent versus the President of the United States who was a complete lunatic made for interesting television and news stories. I'm not sure Cuomo would've gained such attention had there not been such a contrast in the Oval Office.

The appearances on CNN with his brother were criticized on all sides. That stuff was embarrassing.

But now the "mainstream media" is due for a reckoning, because... why? They covered a story with the facts they had at the time.

DeSantis was savaged by the mainstream media over his handling of covid although his state performed better than Cuomo's on every relevant metric. Newsom of California got a pass for even his most absurd covid policies. Noem was blasted. Whitmer was idolized. Seeing a pattern?
At the end of the day, there was clearly partisan bias involved in the MSM coverage of various governors; these differences cannot be explained away by the contrast which this or that governor drew with Trump.

California and New York were always going to be hit hardest. Massive international travel, far more dense cities, etc. etc.

The only reason I know Cuomo exists is because of the negative Covid coverage he got. I don't consume enough MSM to know how the balance went, but you have to look at more than the raw metrics to draw a meaningful conclusion.

Whitmer, for example, did comparatively well when you control for relevant factors. Compared to similarly situated states her handling allowed Michigan to actually take advantage of some of the tourist season.

I haven't tracked particular outcomes per state so I don't know whose policies were effective or not.

But there's a bias in the media in favor of government action to solve problems... so it's not surprising governors who chose not to act were criticized more than those who did act.
