We would routinely trade workers on secondments with Australia at my old firm. Everyone who came over to Canada had the same comments that rent was expensive with few options of actual livable places that were enjoyable.

"America Sucks" - There is vast options in America, you have metropolitan cities that range in ever political spectrum, you have rural, you have every climate available, you have states that have different law systems if the one you're in doesn't appeal to you.

I have friends from Chicago, NY and Seattle, they all manage to live off low wages. They are intelligent and don't live beyond their means despite their surroundings and chasing down dream jobs and education. If you're earning low wages , between 18-35 and don't have at least three other roommates, you're doing it wrong. How enjoyable you find a place will often be dictated by who you surround yourself with.

As a Canadian looking down. America is fucking awesome, lots of flaws sure, but I could name more places in the USA I would want to live than most other places in the world.

This right here is America if you live in a large city. Your 11.50/hr job will not support your $2,200/month rent by yourself.

Why on earth would you be trying to afford a $2200 / month rent on an $24k annualized income?

I live in a very expensive city, and you don't even need to pay half that for a cheap bachelor.

That is what he is saying. People do it though and complain they cant afford to live. I hear it all the time and see it all the time when people actually give me all their monthly expenditures. Its absolutely insane. Hes agreeing with you an I.

I did not live in my first detached home (as a person out on my own) until I was 28. I was making over 140K a year and still living with two roommates because it was the intelligent choice. I lived with two other roommates and we split a 2,600 three bedroom three ways. Nothing nice. I have lived with 2-4 roommates since i left my home at 19.

The only reason I don't now is because I am fortunate enough to live in employee housing which is heavily subsidized so its better than living with roommates, again, its the intelligent choice.

Most wont even believe this, I was making over 60K a year and i lived on an air-mattress forever. I had money for a bed. I had money for furniture, but we didnt buy a single piece of furniture for three years. We sat on camp chairs and used upside down cardboard boxes + our shipping touts as tables. The home was neat and tidy, we all had high earnings and high savings. We just didnt need it.

I used an air mattress as a couch for the longest time. I refused to get a couch until I bought a house because why move furniture and why buy something that might not even fit future perm space when the current space is temp?

My bedroom set is still from when I was born lol. I am refinishing it with a different wood stain to make it look nicer tho xD

In Australia he would not have outstanding medical bills and would be getting paid more than enough to live on for full time work.
Anyone who says there is few livable places in Australia in insane, I have traveled the world and never been anywhere better.

I think you and I both have a sneaking suspicion he can live well enough on full time work but has made live choices that are likely making it difficult to do so. I don't think you as an earner for a second believe it to be impossible to live in most cities with a low wage at full time hours.

You don't know what he had done for healthcare. In Canada most is free here as well and I am not one to disagree that the USA needs a revamp. Some stuff is not free though regardless of Country unless i don't fully understand AUS, If it was something like the guys appendix, yes that should be free.

I feel you on that one man. One man’s trash is another man’s treasure savings. If I need something I’ll buy it, but if I want something, I’ll see if there is someone else who doesn’t want it anymore lol

I routinely still go to the dump for parts. I built a sled to pull behind my skidoo and needed padding, well sure enough a perfectly fine thick foamy from the dump. Lots of still great wood to for slats and runners.

It might just be how I was raised but I see no shame in used goods and actually take pride in making something use-able out of it.

When your minimum wage is ~$10 thats $380 a week.
Minimum wage here is ~$21 around $800 per week, pretty big difference.
All healthcare is free here outside of cosmetic.
