Actually for quite some time, the Middle East was the most religiously free area in the world. People practicing religions other than the state religion were fined, instead of put to death. Cyrus and Darius of the Persian Empire come to mind as the founders of that practice, but that continued all the way through the Ottoman Turks, who were Muslim as well as Arabic.

Israel's government didn't have any power before 1948, and yet the Arabs still invaded. Like I said, you don't get to ignore history.
