I would have gladly jumped on at 5 K if I had any money with which to jump. :(

Well, you can still jump on the top alt coins (litecoin, ehtereum, dash, etc etc) which will grow as much as bitcoin did in 2017. Remember that the cryptocurrency market is not just Bitcoin. Yes, Bitcoin is the King but the other alt coins are also increasing in price as we speak (today was another great day, almost all top coins increased nicely today) and they will grow even more in 2018. It is not too late, in fact, this is just the beginning.

Some businesses have started accepting it, and others have stopped due to volatility.

Just verify an account with any reputable exchange and use it to withdraw cash anytime you want. Wired into your account in 5 business days. Small price to pay... Or sign up for one of the many credit and debit card solutions offered for crypto currencies.

Nothing, really. Bitcoin is detached from its initial guiding principles and intentions, and instead is just a speculative commodity that people are using as either a way to make profit, or as a store of value. Transactions are incredibly slow and the fees so high with Bitcoin that it makes it so that it can't be used for small transactions. Now, that doesn't mean that Bitcoin doesn't have value, but that its value isn't as a currency/payment method.

I always thought you could convert that bitcoin to $USD (or w/e), then use that, right?

Also, some web hosting companies and online retailers accept bitcoin right? Isn't that technically a payment/currency method?

What usually happens in those deals is that the walllet adresses they display are part of a service provider that will do bitcoin transactions for businesses. For the shop or business, they are still only dealing in USD as the currency is converted to USD at the moment of transaction for them.

A lot less headache when you are insecure about your profit margins.

In Brazil there are a lot of businesses that are using DASH, actually thousands of businesses and stores, because its more faster and super low fees.

Like I said in my other topic, Dash and Litecoin are the currency now (fast and low fees), and Bitcoin has become Gold 2.0

Bitcoin is now kept as a stored of value, while Dash and Litecoins are used as currency.

In regards of the other point, you can use localbitcoins or localethereum if you want to liquidate inmediately your BTC or ETH, or you can use COINBASE or UPHOLD or such but they take 5 to 7 days to buy the cryptos and 3 to 5 days to liquidate in fiat. So, if you want the money NOW, use localbitcoins.com / localethereum.com
