The person who broke into your house has already stated his case he means to do you harm in one way or another and it's by violence, he hasn't asked you if he could borrow that stereo has he? He decided to commit violence when he entered, you in turn decided to respond with violence when you picked up the gun, don't talk shoot.
Your comments are probably the prudent thing to do, but I'm going to give another human the benefit of the doubt before I shoot them and assume the liability of that decision, especially if they dont appear armed and are non threatening, and given the police station is 2mins away.
