Atheist is to say that God does not exist, you seems more to be agnostic

Atheism is to say that you lack belief in a god.
I don't believe anywhere in the definition is there a bit saying you believe God does not exist.

In other words, I don't believe in God, but if compelling evidence were to present itself, you'd have me.

Maybe I'm splitting hairs here, not sure.
But I've always felt that lack of belief in something does not imply that you believe it does not exist.
I suppose I could be convinced that I am more of an agnostic, haha.

Atheism is, in a broad sense, the rejection of belief in the existence of deities. In a narrower sense, atheism is specifically the position that there are no deities. Most inclusively, atheism is the absence of belief that any deities exist.

Agnosticism is the view that the truth values of certain claims—especially claims about the existence or non-existence of God, as well as other religious and metaphysical claims—are unknown or unknowable. According to the philosopher William L. Rowe, in the popular sense, an agnostic is someone who neither believes nor disbelieves in the existence of God, whereas a theist and an atheist believe and disbelieve, respectively.

Yea, I guess the issue is that there are so many different definitions from reliable sources.
Being that it is a controversial subject, people naturally create many definitions :/

Nobody is asking you to be in here.
Though if you have some relevant info or opinions, I'd gladly read em up.

i've always maintained that atheism simply means not believing in god but a lot of people prefer to define it as the belief that god does not exist because it's something they can argue against

i've never met nor heard of an atheist that fits this description - dawkins included

I've always though that the definition of an atheist as somebody who knows without a doubt that god does not exist was bull shit.
People try to define us that way so that they can accuse us of being unscientific. (funny that they even bring science into the picture, but whatever, arguments aren't always civil)
Though if that is the true original definition of an atheist (I honestly am not sure what is) then I would say I am not an atheist in that sense.

Atheism isn't just simply "god doesn't exist".

It's a lack of a belief in gods. Then the degree of the atheism is determined based on whether or not you claim gods don't exist.

well the origins if the word simply mean without theism

people like to twist into a belief system and say it's a religion but it literally makes zero claims

it's about as much a religion as abstinence is a sex position

the answer to this discrepancy by william lane craig and his followers that dont' know any better is simply that negative atheism does not exist, there is only positive atheism - and you'll notice almost all of the religious folks on this sf can't distinguish between the two

It is unfair and unscientific to say that there is no God or gods.
