I didn’t really pay attention to this protest, but wasn’t it over the removal of statues?

There were two "protests". The first day was a 100% explicit neo nazi rally. The second day was about statues, but was still very neo-nazi adjacent. Trump made comments the second day about the previous days protest saying good things about them and refused to condemn the neo-nazis when explicitly asked both by reporters and his own party members.

Then he spent about 3 days avoiding criticism from everybody including tons of congressional Republicans about how he just said good things about neo-nazis that killed somebody and refused to condemn them.

Then he did the "very nice people" line in response to that criticism, and tried to walk it back saying "no no not the racists" even though he was still very clearly talking about the neo-nazi rally that he was just in trouble for not condemning.
