I can understand how that would get you fired cause it was your boss, but what if the person is just a co-worker? Would it be right to lose your job over calling a trans woman "sir"?

If I continuously called my female coworkers male pronouns I would get fired. I would get fired for intentionally misgendering somebody because I am engaging in workplace harassment.

I have no idea if my coworkers were born female. I have not seen any of their birth certificates or medical records.

So yes, I would still get fired for misgendering them whether they are trans or cis, because in absence of them explicitly telling me I would never know.

and believe me, if you've worked in the medical field you stop assuming real quick. I've walked in and seen women with full beards because they weren't well enough to shave in the hospital. It happens.

But it's not misgendering when you call a trans woman "sir", though. Because they are actually a man.



Most people can tell someone's gender fairly accurately without checking their birth certificates.



Again, in most cases, it is not normal for people to have to tell you verbally whether they are a man or a woman. We just look at someone cursorily and based on what we see, we arrive at a conclusion about their gender. Which can sometimes be wrong, I give you that, but most of the time we'd be right.



Cases like that are very rare and are pathological. You shouldn't think that just because there are women with beards, that it means from now on you have to rely on the other person to inform you of their gender. Most of the time, when you see a trans woman, it's a man and for you to call "her" sir, you are not misgendering at all.

it does matter, you cant just say "your country just passed gender pronoun laws" and then admit it was a lie, then say "it doesnt matter"

who gives a shit what people want to be called? are you going to refuse to call a judge "your honor" ? no one is forcing you to have basic decency, youre free to purposefully misgender people and you wont go to jail for it but it does make you an asshole

So let's say you call somebody him, and are corrected by them to say they want to be referred to as her. What do you do? You don't have a right to demand their medical records. You don't know their biological sex at birth. Maybe they're detransitioning? Maybe they aren't trans at all. Maybe they are trans. You have no idea!

So when HR calls you in and says "why are you referring to them as a he, when they've told you they are a her"

What is your response? That you know their biology better than they do? That you should be able to call anybody whatever pronoun you want?

Yes, calling me an asshole for calling a trans woman sir....this is exactly the kind of things I am resentful about. Why should I be subjected to this treatment just because I called a man for what he is, a man? Why do I have to abide by someone's preferred pronouns or else face abuse?
