Don't forget the EU is now also relying on the UK for defence. A country that, while possessing top quality military tech, has an army that can be fit on a footy pitch.

The most worrying thing of all is that if Europe is in a dangerous time and may require citizens to fight, our countries have lost all sense of the nationalist pride and social cohension that serves as a pre-requisite for a willingness to fight. Both the Russians and the Ukrainians have it in spades.
The neoliberal Western policies of the past 30 years have
deliberately undermined national pride and social cohesion as a pre-requisite for razing the welfare state and national borders which stand in the way of unfettered, globalized competition... competition which only benefits multinational corporations, to the detriment of domestic workers and national tax revenue.
Regarding the UK military: it makes a lot of sense for the UK to focus on its navy and air force, rather than its army. For the UK, nipping an amphibious invasion of its territory in the bud is the far more promising defense tactic than engaging in ground battles against enemy forces after they have successfully landed.
