Who do you think the shame campaigns affect?
The 300 pound truck drivers that live off mcdonalds that don't give a shit?
Our resources need to go into early development. Healthy living and learning. Help our youth make those smart and healthy choices as early as possible so they can have a better quality life.
We can't make parents make smart choices or make them teach them but we can provide healthy alternatives at our schools and during our summer programs. food/exercise
Education is not about looking a certain way to avoid shame and cruelty it's about giving ourselves and our kids the best fighting chance at living a full and productive life.
So get off your ass and participate in local programs to help fight obesity in a positive and productive way
See, this is the fundamental problem with so many in today's society. It's always someone else's fault or responsibility to make life easier for others. No owning up being responsible for one's self. It's not my fault fat people can't maintain any form of dietary discipline or elect to not exceed their daily caloric intake. Why do we always have to fucking blame someone else for everything?
I will concede that one universal problem in this country is simply the sheer over-abundance and access to food, especially high carbohydrate and processed foods. One thing I learned when I began cooking my own food years ago was just how unhealthy many prepared and cheap foods are. I feel like too many people are lazy now days in this regard. All they care about is shoving food in one end and pushing shit out the other end. Now days I'm very aware of what I cook and eat. I'm not some diet and fitness freak, but I avoid a lot of high sodium, high carb, and frozen stuff.
But still, that's on people, the individual. You can't always say "well poor people can't afford the good and healthy food!" Bullshit, I see people who "live paycheck to paycheck" in apartment housing that go home with a 15$ bucket of Bojangles chicken or some shit. You can make a proper and healthier meal with that kind of money at the grocery store.
Being fat shouldn't be crudely or harshly chastised, but it shouldn't be encouraged either. It is a condition that legitimately raises all sorts of health risks. Not only is it bad for the individual's mortality, but it's bad for the health system, as well. That music video posted a page back, Meghan Trainor - All About That Bass; I wonder how many fat people went around singing or playing that like it was some call-to-arms for fat acceptance. Think they'll be proudly playing it when they're in the doctor's office being diagnosed with on-set diabetes at age 40?
Yelling at someone, "Hey, you fat fucking land whale!" is just demoralizing and makes one look like a callous asshole (what if they have a health condition?). But, opening a discussion with someone with like "Hey, have you thought about losing weight? You'd look and feel much better about yourself", is not fat-shaming, it's just being honest. Let's be honest, too. Given the choice between being an overweight slob or a physical healthy and fit person, which do you think the vast majority of people would choose? Exactly. It seems fat-shaming is the latest battle cry buzzword of the tumblr bridage.
