Massive economic disruption that hurts the middle and lower classes disproportionately will happen no matter what.
Its not "higher gas cost or smooth sailing". It's "higher gas prices or 20% more of the earths surface including parts if the US and Middle East become unlivable".
False dichotomy. There are at least two more options:
- distributing the reduction in consumption/mobility/etc equitably between everyone, rather than pricing the lower and middle classes out while the super rich keep jetting around the world. this would ofc require some sort of ecosocialism.
- finding technological solutions which reduce the amount of sacrifice necessary to keep climate change manageable.
And yes yes, I know what you want to say: the second point goes back to your favorite argument that the world could be a in a much better position in this regard if big oil and corrupt conservative politicians hadn't dropped the ball on the issue for decades.
