NYPost ran the story when the laptop repairman was still just a random anon source. they ran with something that could 100% have been false, just like CNN did reporting "whitehouse insider says general upset when trump asked _____".

Corroboration was widely available in October of last year, and the rebuttals from "mainstream media" outlets consisted of anonymous "intelligence experts" who had (and admitted to having) no actual knowledge of events. The WaPo "fact check" consisted of asking the Biden administration whether it was true, and when the administration lied, taking their revised story at face value with zero outside corroboration. Mainstream outlets pilloried the story and refused to cover it because it was damaging to Biden. That's it. And the fact that these same outlets advanced negative stories on Trump with little or no evidence (e.g. Bountygate, Alfa Bank, Russian compromat) that later turned out to be completely false is about as clear evidence of a double-standard as you can get.
