Maybe they should leave BIPOC people alone since they're the most likely to be sick?

Why not both? Stop the cop killers and the killer cops all at once.

The ones you are referencing are the "if we do nothing" predictions.

Something that changes so quickly and relies on political will which also relies on the study itself, can't really make great predictions of the future, only study the dynamics. And the dynamics of viral spread are pretty easy to understand.

So... they were alarmist...

No lol

>If you smash headfirst into another car where you're both going 60 miles per hour everybody will die, and if you swerve you will likely lose control of the car and kill at least one of the six. So let's make sure you are going a responsible speed and take the right precautions.

Ha! So alarmist. Like one of them isn't gonna swerve out of the way. This is irresponsible media.

Bad comparison. Everyone who has ever driven a vehicle will have a feeling for the way speed, momentum and braking work, and will intuitively understand that speeding is dangerous. By contrast, most people had no idea about the dangerousness of this new virus, they had to rely entirely on the assessment of the experts, who were themselves just starting to figure things out back in February/March/April. And when it comes to the danger associated with the potential dynamic of an exponentially growing pandemic, the liberal side itself was claiming that "most people dont understand exponential growth".

This is actually a great argument in my favor. It's not intuitive to understand how destructive a pandemic can be, so that actually works in favor of an alarmist interpretation to motivate the public to comply with measures against it.

Still, this assumes the media in general were alarmist, which I don't think they were. And believe me, there's a lot of shitty science reporting out there, but this doesn't seem to be one of those cases.

See, that's where we fundamentally disagree. I think that it's best when elites and leaders use an open and honest communication with the common people, even in difficult moments A patronizing communication that intentionally twists the truth and spins ambiguous facts in order to "nudge" people causes more harm than good. Trying to manipulate the plebs into doing what the elites consider to be "the right thing", but something that the plebs would be too stupid to realize/do by themselves, is ultimately a vote of no confidence from the ruling class against its populace. It undermines the essential trust between different layers of society and sows division that populists and demagogues can exploit.

But perhaps it's pointless to have this discussion with Americans. The U.S. are a special case in the sense that it's the only first world country in which the president himself was on the other end of the spectrum and actively spread misinformation that sought to downplay the virus. My point about how a one-sided and unnecessarily alarmist press coverage has heightened confusion and distrust instead of being helpful is probably more cogent in the context of Europe's response to the coronavirus.
