Bad comparison. Everyone who has ever driven a vehicle will have a feeling for the way speed, momentum and braking work, and will intuitively understand that speeding is dangerous. By contrast, most people had no idea about the dangerousness of this new virus, they had to rely entirely on the assessment of the experts, who were themselves just starting to figure things out back in February/March/April. And when it comes to the danger associated with the potential dynamic of an exponentially growing pandemic, the liberal side itself was claiming that "most people dont understand exponential growth".
This is actually a great argument in my favor. It's not intuitive to understand how destructive a pandemic can be, so that actually works in favor of an alarmist interpretation to motivate the public to comply with measures against it.
Still, this assumes the media in general were alarmist, which I don't think they were. And believe me, there's a lot of shitty science reporting out there, but this doesn't seem to be one of those cases.
