https://www.rferl.org/a/first-eu-western-balkan-summit-15-years-focus-on-integration-tusk-/29231431.html

The EU will not expand any further in the short or mid term. Albania and the 4 remaining ex-yugoslavic that aren't in the EU will have to wait to join. They'll receive economic help, but that's it for now.

I think it's the right thing to do. Letting the balkans in would have great strategic value and make it easier to control security, migration and smuggling, but as we've seen from the latest EU expansions, it's better to secure what we have for now and fix our internal problems before we think about growing further.

good news for germany, we dont need more countries demanding billions from us

€: let me add that i do support keeping these countries close

the balkans are not exactly a stable region and turkey and saudi arabia are trying to spread islam there

Meanwhile, in Italy, Lega and M5S have agreed on a government program. It seems like a total mess, with massive increases in public spending (including a UBI system) while at the same time delivering huge tax cuts. There are fears that this could skyrocket the already high Italian debt. The program also includes the plan to deport 500k "illegal immigrants", but there is no way to know how exactly they plan to do this... seems almost impossible from a bureaucratic perspective. Oh well, this is what happens when you vote for populists... let's see what they can deliver out of all of these promises.

Btw, regarding the EU, the program confirms they'll take on a eurosceptic stance, but it's not as terrible as people were fearing... there will be no referendum to leave the euro and return to the lira, and the debt with the EU will be respected (although they hope to negotiate some).

ofc not, after all they will want us to bail them out when their fiscally suicidal economic plans inevitably fail...
