Should Capitalism serve Democracy, or should Democracy serve Capitalism? If you believe the latter, then you likely see no problem with the rapidly expanding wealth gap. If you believe our economic system should be the servant, not the master of society, then the impacts iof wealth inequality scare the hell out of you. Regardless of which ideological position you hold, unless you are a member of the richest 1%, you are being disenfranchised by wealth inequality.
French Economist Thomas Piketty’s landmark book “Capital in the 21st Century” provides an unprecedented and exceptional analysis of the ways in which capital is becoming concentrated within the ownership of an ever smaller number of people, and being moved from productive capital (investment in things like transport, health, technology, and so on) which circulates and expands within the economy, to hoarded capital (sitting in bank accounts earning interest) that offers no value to the wider economy.
