Did Trump and his administration make an effort to defeat this amendment? He tweets about the most absurd and ridiculous stuff... did he tweet about this at the time? Maybe he did, I don't know.
This amendment passed this year. What about the previous years? I'm not even sure that amendment makes it impossible to withdraw... there's just probably some budgetary consequences. Again, the politics favors Trump on that. The ads write themselves.... withholding defense dollars because Trump brought our troops home? You underestimate the extent that Trump has a political advantage here... the cult is almost 100% with him on this. At the end of the day he controls where the troops go. It might get a little hazy when he wants to send them somewhere new, but bringing them home? To my knowledge, the power and law is with him.
Democrats support leaving Afghanistan. Some are more concerned than others about what we leave there, and what deal gets negotiated on the way out. I conceded that Trump would get criticized for cutting and running, but it wouldn't be a sustained criticism because most Democrats and most voters want to leave.
It's kind of remarkable that for one of the most important issues you believe in, you give Trump a complete pass, even though the politics are in his favor. That cult koolaid fucks people up.
I posted a source talking about a congressional vote in which the Armed Services committee literally put in place certain very difficult to achieve points for troop draw down to happen in Afghanistan and you're doubling down. The purpose of the amendment is specifically to prevent Trump from doing this.
If Democrats supported leaving Afghanistan the bill would have not passed 44-11. There's 26 republicans on that Committee. Let's assume they all voted 'for' this amendment that still means at least 18 other democrats voted to put in place rules making it impossible for Trump to draw down.
It's pretty astounding how on a daily basis you accuse others of something you are guilty of. Someone can post sourced proof showing that Trump did try to bring troops home only to fail because of constant and verifiable opposition and you blame Trump, as if the congressional check had nothing to do with it. There's no complete pass, there's observing reality. He tried to bring troops home, cabal of hawks in both parties acted against it. Easy for an isolationist to choose sides here.
