Japanese people aren't uneducated hicks like many Americans who couldn't tell Austria from Australia, of course Japanese folks will find France on a map. This doesn't contradict them being xenophobic and feeling superior to everyone else.

I actually have a pretty high opinion of the Japanese. Fascinating culture, fascinating country - it's just that they don't make it easy on foreigners and have a sense of superiority over others to them - one which is in many cases justified!

Me too, and I also figured out why they have a good score on this wiki sourced xenophobia index; because they won't harm or even psychologically, even if many are very relunctant considering how closed on itself the Japanese society is.
I guess the score is also based on agressions toward migrants or stuff like this.
