The capital in many ways is viewed as the face of the country. Lots of foreign diplomats & dignitaries there. It's obviously not going to be on par with random cities around the country. I think it's pretty common sense to want your capital to be exceptionally safe and clean no?

sure. safe and clean. and for every task a tool. what might be a good tool for stopping crime? they're called police. the military doesn't fight crime, they kill people. we've shown time and again we're TERRIBLE peace keepers and occupiers. whether it's Korea, Japan, Afghanistan, or Iraq. Why would a population of US citizens with a contempt for authority be any different? and all of this because some tech bro got jumped? seems meh at best.

This isn't a foreign country that's close to a warzone though. It's probably a good idea to understand what capacity they would serve? It's pretty obvious they aren't going to riding around in armored vehicles manning mounted machine guns on DC streets.

If a bunch of national guard that do fuck all to begin with (so why not actually put them to work) act as auxiliary/support in a variety of ways for the local PD, i don't really think this is as big of a deal as people are making it out to be.

No, to get to EU levels you'd just have to trade racial demographics. Its a black crime problem, and you can't change deep rooted cultural failings with social systems, which are generally comparable already.

It still is shocking to me the overt racism some folks have no issues expressing.

national guard are paid part time wages while inactive, activate them and you pay full time to stand around and look tough. putting them to work has a cost its not just a "why not use resources laying around" situation.

and if they're acting in duty they'll be armed in full, regardless of being outside of an m60 mounted vehicle. even so they'll be riding around in army vehicles, not cop cruisers. its just a bad look.

then they'll need training because this is way outside of their trained duties. i dont even think it will be a Kansas State type disaster, btw. i just think its gonna be bad optics and ineffective at doing much of anything. many of these neighborhoods have had a 2 man patrol car on each block of them 24-7 for decades, crime still is rampant. unless u make every family adopt a national guard member and bring in 50k of them to line the streets its not gonna do much. we'll get a few fluff pieces of some monster energy drink juiced Kyle tackling a guy selling a dimebag of weed but i doubt it does much more.

I don't know and don't feel strong either way. The police academy is what 3 months? And if you exclude some of the skills that'd be covered in basic training i.e. physical reqs, can probably boiled down to less.

Again i don't really think the military would have an active role but be more of a support here. I'm glad you brought up the 2 man squad car because in my city much of the squad cars are solo. And we have pretty bad crimes rates. We've all seen videos of female officers getting rag dolled by male perps, having a 22 year old guardsman with her IMO would still be better vs a female officer trying to engage with a perp on her own. This is one example, but again there's other functions the military would be able to fill.

DC has tons of security requirements, details, official events, etc. that many of these cops get pulled into as part of work that encumbers their actual 'police' work. There's really no reason for some of these to not be manned and helped on by the military.

One of the lessons i learned both from CJ classes and time in the field was that former soldiers often make bad cops. its just a different mentality. i dont see them working in nicely even with training. and that training is often very expensive. i see this going badly, hopefully nonviolently. better to fund police more imo, if u have a crime problem thats always the best call. and not being encumbered by a state legislature is nice too, way less red tape.

By all means please elaborate. I'm sure there are very good reasons you think black people in America should continue to be criminally victimized and murdered at such astronomically disproportionate rates that it skews our entire national crime statistics, instead of addressing the very obvious cultural underpinnings that keep black people as second class citizens. That has after all been the status quo of post-jim crow America, keep piling on social support systems that do nothing to address the social and cultural erosion, creating generations dependent on government services rather than self-sustaining.
