The dark ages were clearly the Kali Yuga, an era in which men care only about desire.

Currently, that would put us in the Dwapara Yuga, where dishonorable merchants rule the world. And we'd probably be here for another 2,000 years.

There were some stories of civilization at higher moral states than now that existed before the dark ages, so it's plausible.

I'm in total agreement on civilizations at higher moral states. Atlantis? Dwarka? Lemuria? Mu? Hibrasil? etc. etc.
