massive corruption, abusing the pandemic in an attempt to consolidate political power, the rejection of science and expertise, and the desire to appear 'strong' by not taking any precautions by authoritarian shitlords... that's what countries like brazil, us, and russia for example have in common.
Hungary, the Czech Republic, Greece, Poland, and even Turkey (as hard as it is to believe) are all countries with a right-wing government, high levels of corruption and "strongmen" being in fashion - yet they all did a good job at keeping the virus under control. I could probably find more examples if I wanted to.
At the same time, the not particularly corrupt and populist left-wing/centrist governments in France, Spain and Italy have done a quite poor job.
