WASHINGTON —President Joe Biden will announce sweeping new vaccine mandates designed to ramp up pressure on the unvaccinated, putting in place additional mandates for federal workers and health care providers and calling for the private sector to do the same.
Biden is expected to announce that all health care facilities must have their staff fully vaccinated in order to be reimbursed by Medicare and Medicaid, funds that health care providers are heavily dependent on, according to people familiar with the plan. As of July, 27 percent of healthcare workers were unvaccinated, according to a study by the Covid States Project. There are 22 million workers in the health care industry, accounting for 14 percent of all U.S. workers, according to the Census Bureau.
Biden is also expected to sign an executive order requiring all federal executive branch workers to be vaccinated, and a second executive order that says that standard should be extended to employees of contractors that do business with the federal government, according to a person familiar with the plans. Biden had given federal workers the choice of undergoing regular testing instead of getting vaccinated, but that testing opt-out will no longer be an option.
"He's going to build on our mandates requirements, making it so that workers in the federal government or others have to get vaccinated, we've seen that work," White House press secretary Jen Psaki said Thursday on MSNBC.

Thank God we have a sane person in the White House.
