if they were genuinely 'rebellious' in nature, you wouldn't have one side being completely ok with citizens being snatched off the streets in unmarked vehicles by fascist goons, simply for protesting police violence and racial inequality - or with a president blatantly misusing the office to enrich himself and his family, and expanding his powers while all the so called 'checks and balances' are being exposed as entirely insufficient and toothless.
if anything, it's a reflection of how hyper partisanship and constant propaganda has robbed americans of any truly held values and principles, that even things that are universally accepted - like the importance of combating man made climate change, or common sense measures against a pandemic - are somehow controversial issues amongst americans. that is very much the opposite of some innate barbaric root, it's the result of a deliberately outrage machinery, established to produce dissent, in order to distract from the fact that their ruling class keeps robbing them blind.
