Handguns are primarily most useful in dealing with threats. I always carry when I'm hiking in the woods, or when I'm living in rural areas. Turns out the mountain lion and bear don't care if you'll "call the cops" on them. But they DO care about the insanely loud noise the gun makes, so a warning shot will scare them off typically.
I totally agree with your statement there. In Australia you can get a gun if you need it and have the necessary documents + get a license.
General mass shootings aside, my point is if everyone has a gun for "self defense", it creates a more trigger happy situation. Some may think if I don't shoot first, he will. That is how human psychology works.
ofc ar15s are rifles... I wrote that at 6am sorry :/
Let's not discuss Rittenhouse's case. I think he was right to defend himself ofc but exactly this happens if everyone has a gun. Little arguments will end deadly.

Regarding the whole "some people don't care if they die" thing... Who says you need a nuke to kill thousands of people if you're willing to die? How about fertilizer? How about an airplane? You can buy both of those easily enough, assuming you can afford them. How about chlorine gas? The person unafraid to die could spend $20 down at walmart, and quite easily combine the ingredients to make chlorine gas and put it in front of the intake screen of an air venting system. That plus $50 worth of chains and locks to insure no exits, and that's a far more certain way to commit mass murder/suicide than a gun, far cheaper too. The nuke could maybe work to kill more, the problem again with the nuke is how to make it. Just the components necessary would cost you more than 99.9% of the population has. That's not because they're so heavily controlled, but more in the extreme difficulty of making all the components, and refining the uranium, and timing the explosions so all the weapons-grade uranium reach the exact same spot at the exact same time to set off the reaction. It's not simple, easy, or cheap. And those willing to put in that level of effort are very unlikely to be suicidal.
Man let's not get distracted with nukes and self created gas and stuff XD
My simple point is (and please correct me if it sounds so out of touch) that more guns will not result to less gun violence. Let's at least be truthful. More guns (especially if guns are easily accessible) will result to more gun violence.
If everyone around me would have a gun, I definitely would buy a gun as a deterrent. This same rule works with nuclear weapons on international scale.
And unfortunately it only takes one sick person to use the gun against kids or whoever he wants. It is a tool that makes killing as easy as pulling a trigger.
