They dont claim to have the moral highground, they actually do have it. Any country that is not mass murdering its own ppl, not murdering its own journalists, not murdering its political opposition does have a moral highground when discussing russia. So basically every single country on earth, maybe with the exception of china.

Let's say it's true that putin murdered some journalists (it's not, but I'll play devil's advocate) how does a few dozen dead journalists make Putin a murderer of millions?
Even if it were true that Russia murdered some people here or there, how does the US have moral highground after having killed a million people in Iraq, tens of thousands more in Afghanistan, thousands in Syria (counting US airstrikes only, not deaths caused by their support for terrorists), and the thousands more killed by airstrikes in Libya, many of whom were civilians?
By the way, still waiting for the Russian invasion of Ukraine that
still hasn't happened yet
