How fucking incompetent are these idiots? Just as the wider public and even the media finally wake up to the incompetence of the Biden/Harris admin and would be willing to boot Democrats from office in 2022, let's bring back Trump to take the spotlight away from Afghanistan, covid, the still ongoing border crisis, the $3.5 trillion slush fund for liberal priorities and so on. A hardline stance on abortion which doesn't even enjoy majority support in deep red states and a potential return of Trump are the last things the GOP should want the public debate to revolve around right now, but here we are.
Also, going back to the Texas abortion bill and the SCOTUS inaction on it: don't TX Republicans and the conservative justices realize that their approach is giving ammunition to those in the Democratic party who want to convince Manchin and Sinema to abolish the filibuster, stack the courts, pass sweeping voting rights legislation and so on? From a tactical point of view, they should have kept a low profile until they win back one chamber of Congress in the midterms.
I think you're underestimating how quickly American voters forget things. If COVID ends up being endemic and inflation/unemployment is high-ish, Trump can simply say "there was nothing I could do about COVID, it's China's fault anyway plus I got the vaccine ready. Oh, and the economy was the best ever under me!" I think you'd be surprised at how quickly people forgive and forget.
Also, I know that Biden is at a pretty low point, but even someone like Trump can win a polarized environment:

Unlikely for two reasons. One, abortion is relatively unpopular, especially after the first trimester, and two, abortion is even less popular in the swing districts the Democrats need to hold.
I dunno, high turnout can fuck things over. Hell, Obama won INDIANA of all places b/c a bunch of liberal non-voters ended up voting. Even in swing districts, you have a lot of crazies.
Texas' law is a defacto ban on abortion. Pregnancy is measured after your last period so you're "4 weeks pregnant" when you're about to have the period you're going to miss. Periods can often be irregular so you're going to be almost 5 weeks pregnant by the time you go and get a pregnancy test. An abortion ban is DEEPLY unpopular.
