But that's the thing: according to countless polls, majorites of Western populations have rejected high-volume third world immigration for years, if not decades - but on this particular issue, the moderate right and centrist parties consistently refuse to listen to their voters. It's an issue with a particularly pronounced split between the preferences of the elites and the preferences of commoners, so the issue lends itself for populists.
It's easy. Boomers are going in pension while have giving birth to few children. Regular western Europeans avoid "dirty" jobs. The jobs like plumbers etc. are systemic and VERY immportant. The state fails without them, so we import cheap labour under the guise of helping people. The problematic part are Ukrainians. Lots of women and children who can't really work.
As banal as it may sound, raising children and getting them through the educational system until they can work is way more expensive than using brain/skill drain from other countries. Infact, most highly qualified Germans in Germany are mostly parasitic to the German society. For example, best doctors or absolvents don't stay in Ger but go to Swiss or the US while getting those degrees for peanuts compared to elsewhere. Their education costs billions yet we have a lack of doctors etc. in inland
Centrist and right want cheap labour to prevent people from getting the wages they deserve. They aren't going to move a finger about the immigration issue. Far right like AFD is going to "fix" stuff on the surface for everyone to see but they won't solve the systemic labour problems but make it worse for migrants already here ( social tensions making it about them and us). Without labour, tax income and people who consume, no capitalistic state can function, yet the ones who complain the most are boomers who are responsible for the current situation.
