The purpose of verification is to verify that a person is actually who they say they are. It also makes it more difficult for imposters and scammers.

When someone gets verified and then pretends to be another celebrity, that undermines the purpose of verification. Its entirely reasonable for that to (continue to) be against the rules.
It is not in the same category as the widespread censorship and throttling of viewpoints and persons that are inconvenient for democrats and the government regime.

Hopefully Elon's acquisition will greatly increase free speech on twitter and the bad faith attacks and false equivocations will not undermine that too much.

It's malice through character misrepresentation which results in defamation which leads to loss of businesses or brand reputation. You are Joe Shmo nobody so you have nothing to worry about but when you are dealing with a global personal brand (which musk is) then it becomes a a different ball game and laws definetly apply. lawyers define damages by asserting that a person's actions caused X amount of financial loss. that is not applicable in this case because no one person's actions or even a group of impersonators actions can be proven to have caused an amount of financial damage. that's what ive been telling you all along, and you came back with "ask johnny depp", where that isnt the case, which i also told you.
