as I see it, I earn X. I don't know my peers' salaries. If they earn X plus 10% or X minus 10%, it doesn't affect me at all, so why know?

I focus to be the best I can be against an ideal standard, not against my peers.

But your boss uses this to his/their advantage and pay less than if everyone knew.

You're assuming that the manager is a money hungry despot. That is not the case everywhere.

everyone can negotiate and should, the monkey can't. usually monkeys cry for reparations.

I'm ok with publishing the salary range for open positions.

For positions already filled, actual employees, it's their right to have this known or not. I would choose not to.
