Trump does not need to be "A Russian asset" for an investigation to be valid. In this case we found he met with Russia and lied about it, his first campaign manager passed information to Russia, and Trump was willing to work with Russia and was only stymied by his subordinates refusing to carry out his orders. All of this is in the Mueller report.
Does it matter if it was a phone call, an email, or an in person conversation? Making illegal demands is a crime even if it is "a phone call".

Trump has never not been on the offensive, and he is obviously wrong. His lawyers can be disbarred if they lie to a judge, which is why when they are asked point blank by the judges involved they don't even claim there's a fraud case.
