Fad diets are definately a problem. Under eating followed by binging is such a common problem. Fear of carbs is unhealthy and counter productive.
If people ate the right foods they would be amazed how much and how often they could eat. Key word is food, most of the shit people eat isn't even food
People treat the overweight like shit so then they look for the quick fix and are sold nonsense diets sold by dirtbags to make a quick buck.
Fear of carbs is real. Too much blood sugar causes tissue damage and breads, grains, starches, and tubers are all essentially sugar. Go run a mile on a treadmill and see how many calories you burn. It's pretty close to 1 slice of bread. That's how damaging these things are when your body maintains about 16 calories in blood sugar in your body at a given time. A hot pocket causes havoc to your body's internal balancing mechanisms as the chemistry of digestive food happens faster than your ability to store it.
