That's an extremely selective statistic. Since Obama ended Mission Enduring Freedom at the end of 2014, only 1 out of the 6 years since has had a higher January through August death toll than 2021. And that year is 2019, when the Taliban were mounting their attacks across Afghanistan to ramp up the pressure on the isolationist Trump admin and the war-weary American public ahead of the Doha talks.
