And this is the issue. We have a lot of criticism of Cuomo by people with no understanding of how the powers work or a basic understanding of the healthcare system.

I'm very open to Cuomo messing up. It was a pandemic and they were the first ones hit, they were the most vulnerable with lots of poverty and high population density, etc. etc. So there's ample room to show that it wasn't handled properly, but to show it wasn't handled properly we need to know how it could have been handled better. Maybe New York was doomed from the start and there was nothing he could have done? Maybe he dropped the ball and could have prevented 90% of infections? I've not seen a great argument for either being the case.

I think the issue is that we knew that it spread like wildfire in nursing homes based on what happened in Washington (February). It would have been more prudent to let them die alone to be honest.

Gonna be hard for a criticism that consists of "He didn't mandate we stop all medical service to the elderly" to stick.

Not gonna be hard to get "why couldnt you do what Governor DeSantis did with Florida nursing homes (during their first wave)" to stick.

Deaths update

NY 32.4k deaths

FL 7.4k deaths with decreasing daily deaths. At this point it would take a pretty significant second Florida wave to reach NY

Florida is bigger population wise and much older meaning it’s much more at risk.

Not the elderly, to COVID positive people (who are also elderly). Keeping them isolated is very, very important.

So treat them and discharge to the bus stop?

No, put them in the hospital tents that were built. The whole POINT of quarantining people is to keep them SEPARATE. It's very clear that Cuomo had a tough decision to make but it seems obvious to me that putting them with OTHER vulnerable people is the absolute worst thing you could do. I have to imagine that Cuomo had a lot of faith in nursing home staff to do the right thing, but that was really unwise.

Those are two important factors, but they are not the only factors.

Poverty, population density, ratio of medical resources to population, and frequency of international travel are also huge risk factors that tip against New York.

There's also the time aspect. We know more NOW than we did back then. Honestly, that's why it's really embarrassing that cases/deaths in America are so fucking high.

Now there is no excuses for the increasing rate.

The vast majority of conservatives approve of the way Donald Trump is handling the coronavirus.
