Laying low and not getting blown up by ISIS-K? The US was explicitly telling people it wasn't safe, eventually shutting down the airport and telling people not to come. Maybe they did listen.

I don't feel bad. It's like feeling bad for those dumb urban folk who didn't leave before Hurricane Katrina hit. Maybe they'll learn their lesson this time.

It would be comparable, if Chris Kyle was sitting on top of a building sniping people in their cars on I10 as they tried to leave.

The idea was to evacuate the local allies and helpers who worked for NATO troops, plus some liberal (by Afghan standards, lol) politicians, journalists and teachers. And of course their core families (spouse, children).

Dunno about the exact numbers for the US, but Germany evacuated some 5k people during the entire 2 weeks while our Foreign Minister said that around 40k would have been entitled to a visa. The US had a much larger military operation in Afghanistan, hence much more allies and helpers who might now be at risk. So if you grant visas using the same standards as us Germans, we're easily talking about a total number in the hundreds of thousands.

Also keep in mind that pretty much only those already living in Kabul had a chance to make it to the airport and catch one of the last planes. The local helpers from other regions in Afghanistan were totally out of luck.

we evacuated a lot of people, but most of those who worked for us are still there

who the fuck is the entire rest?

we already know that some criminals are among them so its another epic fail

11 days ago Joe Biden promised;
"Let me be clear, any American who wants to come home, we will get you home."

Today at General McKenzie's press conference, he admitted;
Quote
Look, there's a lot of heartbreak associated with this departure. We did not get everybody out that we wanted to get out. But I think if we'd stayed another 10 days, Luis, we wouldn't have gotten everybody out that we wanted to get out, and there still would have been people who would have been disappointed with that. It's a -- it's a tough situation.
But I want to emphasis again that simply because we have left, that doesn't mean the opportunities for both Americans that are in Afghanistan that want to leave and Afghans who want to leave -- they will not be denied that opportunity. I think our Department of State's gonna work that very hard in the days and weeks ahead.

Oh boy, this quote

Indeed, but we evacuated everybody before the end of the month deadline, so what's to blame for that's specifically on Biden again?

really didn't age well. :unsure:

I mean, I agree with you guys that most of the 300ish American dumbfucks who stayed in Afghanistan for too long have no one but themselves to blame - but what a transparent and unfounded attempt at downplaying the mess this withdrawal has been.

Did you expect any different from our incompetent government?

I really don't think that's a given. Afghanistan is huge with poor infrastructure, and Kabul might as well be the moon to Afghans living in the rest of the country. Between the great difficulty of getting everyone to the evacuation point and the extreme danger at that bottleneck with the US actively telling people not to try to evacuate, while closing down the airport several times- there's plenty of reason that people who wanted to evacuate would be unable to do so safely. When 180+ people get blown up at the gates, you can have a lot less blame for the people who didn't make it through.

The Taliban were sweeping through Afghanistan's provinces and encroaching on Kabul for 10 to 14 days. Travel warnings and urgent appeals for all American citizens to leave the country asap were issued many days before the fall of Kabul. Most Americans had enough time to get out if you ask me. Different story for the local helpers who were relying on visas and the like.

The same 10-14 days that the President of the United States of America and all his top generals were publicly insisting Kabul wouldn't fall for months to come and there was a lot of spare time to evacuate.
I can blame the intelligence community and military brass for botching their jobs, and I can blame the Commander-in-Chief as ultimate responsibility of the armed forces and their strategy rests with him, but I don't think I can blame the civilians on the ground for listening to them
