The idea was to evacuate the local allies and helpers who worked for NATO troops, plus some liberal (by Afghan standards, lol) politicians, journalists and teachers. And of course their core families (spouse, children).

Dunno about the exact numbers for the US, but Germany evacuated some 5k people during the entire 2 weeks while our Foreign Minister said that around 40k would have been entitled to a visa. The US had a much larger military operation in Afghanistan, hence much more allies and helpers who might now be at risk. So if you grant visas using the same standards as us Germans, we're easily talking about a total number in the hundreds of thousands.

Also keep in mind that pretty much only those already living in Kabul had a chance to make it to the airport and catch one of the last planes. The local helpers from other regions in Afghanistan were totally out of luck.

To be fair, this will most definitely be one of the low points of Biden's term. I doubt his approval stays that low. Can't see him droppign below 45% in the long run unless the covid situation gets really out of hand or his legislative agenda completely unravels in Congress.

The evacuation of Afghanistan has been abandoned. There are reported hundreds of Americans who wanted to, but were unable, to leave the country.
The US has withdrawn its presence ahead of the turnover deadline and the Americans are now left in the country without the US able to provide any way out.

I've seen reports that there were 300 Americans left, and they likely escaped the country via other means.

Even so, the Americans had like months to get out. They knew what they were doing.

I'm more interested in the Afghanis that helped us than a few hundred stray Americans that refused to listen.

Laying low and not getting blown up by ISIS-K? The US was explicitly telling people it wasn't safe, eventually shutting down the airport and telling people not to come. Maybe they did listen.
