- plan the drawdown properly
- not give up Bagram air field so early
- not pull out the soldiers before the civilian personnel and the local allies who were slated for evacuation
- accept the Taliban offer to have US soldiers control Kabul for a week or so during the final phase of the withdrawal
- after it had become clear that the Taliban would steamroll the country, send troops to secure the Kabul airport earlier than late Friday, a mere 40 hours before the Taliban took Kabul
- don't hand your enemy lists of your local allies which are on their kill lists
- don't leave behind sensitive material like decryption equipment

Not sure provoking more terror attacks would be havee been a great idea.
Leaving fast they also avoid alot of risk, protecting themselves of complication.

Regarding decryption they definitely have a backdoor on their equipment IMO

I mean, doing the right thing even though it's going to be messy. That's leadership. Biden could have cancelled the withdrawal and probably wouldn't have tanked his popularity at all.

Like it or not, Biden is the one who withdrew. Trump made the agreement, but fundamentally did not get it done despite having 4 years.

- "Trump left Biden a fully negotiated withdrawal plan with a very tight deadline that Biden had to stick with"
- "Biden deserves praise for having the willpower and leadership to actually pull out"

Biden could have just as easily cancelled the plan and not pulled out. If Biden did pull out he had to stick with the withdrawal plan, but he didn't have to withdraw at all.

Okay, but no one (except for a tiny handful of butthurt neocon warmongers) is angry about the decision to leave - they're angry about the botched execution of the withdrawal. And in this context, it's ridiculous to claim that "Biden deserves credit for Afghanistan".

Indeed, but we evacuated everybody before the end of the month deadline, so what's to blame for that's specifically on Biden again?

This was going to be a shit show no matter what, and once the smoke dies down I think it's going to be seen as being handled better than it seemed in the moment. The big issue is that the Afghani government collapsed far far faster than anybody anticipated. Probably went worse than even the worst scenarios Biden was briefed on.

But we did not evacuate everybody?!?! There's tens of thousands of Afghan allies left behind who couldnt reach the airport anymore. A much smaller number of people who actually made it to the airport before the Taliban takeover of Kabul were flown out over the past 2 weeks, sure. But this does not mean that the original objective of the mission was achieved.

Who do we have to evacuate that we can evacuate? I'm not totally familiar with the visa situation, except that I know it's shitty and I fully blame Biden for not creating a faster visa process for these people.
