Afghanistan is a 20 years failure and the leaving process started before Biden.
Anyone telling me precisely what Biden should have done instead is welcome lol.

Putting aside whether leaving was the good decision in the first place, he could have at least not pull out in only a week without making sure americans and allies can leave safely and orderly.

Maybe leaving quickly was the best "cut the crap" option by FAR. Especially when we have ISIS bombing around.

Dude you see it the wrong way. It is unsafe and a shitshow NOW because the pull out was poorly handled. Everything was going fine in the past year before Biden screws this up [putting aside wasted money]. Of course now that it's fucked moving fast may really well be the best option. My point is that an organized, planned, thoughtful pull out could have avoided the bombings and deaths happening now.

For a guy who fell asleep he sure does blink alot

- plan the drawdown properly
- not give up Bagram air field so early
- not pull out the soldiers before the civilian personnel and the local allies who were slated for evacuation
- accept the Taliban offer to have US soldiers control Kabul for a week or so during the final phase of the withdrawal
- after it had become clear that the Taliban would steamroll the country, send troops to secure the Kabul airport earlier than late Friday, a mere 40 hours before the Taliban took Kabul
- don't hand your enemy lists of your local allies which are on their kill lists
- don't leave behind sensitive material like decryption equipment

Planning the drawdown properly probably wasn't possible since the Taliban didn't agree to a second extension.

They've evacuated basically everybody at this point with only one incident, so honestly I don't think this went as bad as it seemed now that all is said and done. We're down to like 300 people left who probably fled the country by other means.

The encryption equipment was a major flub, we're going to have to investigate what the fuck happened there. That's not something Biden would have had any control over, and we need to determine what decisions led to that equipment being left behind.

They had agreed to an extension of the original deadline, the new deadline had given the Pentagon and the Biden admin more than enough time to carry out the drawdown in safer, more orderly fashion.


The evacuations from the besieged Kabul airport went okay-ish given the dire expectations - but that's a weaksauce argument. We should never have ended up in this situation to begin with.

That's like a formula 1 car which has an engine failure mid-race, and the boss of the stable afterwards says "the process of getting the dead car off the track and into the garage went fairly well".


Agreed, this blunder is not on Biden specifically. Somewhere in the Pentagon, heads will have to roll for that one.
