Except that I never did that. I was arguing in support of offthevoids assertion that the Afghanistan case is a special one and not a suitable counterexample against Johnny's original claim that imperialism doesn't exist anymore.
How was Afghanistan a "special case"?
Even the assertion that the Taliban was "harboring" Al Qaeda is not particularly correct. The Taliban formed from people in Pakistan Refugee Camps during the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan. They received anti-Soviet educational materials and training from the US. They were effectively raised to believe in uber-nationalist ideals, while still bred into Islamic values.
The #1 issue with the Taliban after the Soviet rollout was that they had neither the level of arms or funding that the Maoists and Mujahedeen groups had. At that time, Al Qaeda offered the support of both funding and arms, as well as military training to the Taliban. Without Al Qaeda support, it's unlikely the Taliban would ever have managed to take over Afghanistan. So the more accurate case is that Al Qaeda was supporting the Taliban, as opposed to the Taliban harboring Al Qaeda.
Further, most non war-mongers don't believe for a second that the Taliban's resistance to US demands that they take action against Al Qaeda was worthy of extended occupation and the establishment of a puppet government. Al Qaeda operated independently of the Taliban, the US could very easily have targeted Al Qaeda directly without going to war against the Taliban. No, the "harboring Al Qaeda" claim was mostly an excuse to nation build in the region. In this case, "Imperialism" does seem to fit the bill, at least semi-accurately.
Say every negative thing you want about the botched withdrawal, Biden fucked up royally. However, claiming that Afghanistan was a special case is not particularly accurate. Realistically, we didn't like how the Taliban governed, and sought to replace them with our own puppet government. That government and it's attached military failed so miserably that they were overrun virtually overnight by the Taliban. AKA, American-style imperialism was tried and failed.
