If that was true, why did overly Trump- and StopTheSteal-focused candidates underperforms more traditional Republicans in pretty much every single midterm race?

that's an entirely different kind of bet. Trump still has the highest name recognition and the highest floor of all potential GOP primary candidates, so he has some big advantages. particulary once you take into account the winner-take-all nature of most GOP primaries.

This does not imply that the whole party is a personality cult.

Because there's voters who prefer Republicans but do not prefer lunatics. But the segment that do prefer lunatics is strong enough that it controls the party.
