I have to agree with Black XistenZ in this case...
1. A lot of FBI "anonymous sources" could easily be protecting themselves. The FBI hasn't really been on the up and up too much in the past... say, 8 years.
2. Same for media types. Their first concern is keeping their job, THEN reporting the news. More or less, for two years at least, they have been on a search and destroy mission, not just a search and report mission.
Where are all these "books" that will explain all the horrible details about the evil orange man? They've all been debunked, that's where. These days, anonymous sources, are NOT usually on the up and up, they are more like political stooges.
Where are all these "tapes" from either Cohen or that political aide girl? Debunked ofc.
How about just the general folk that have been involved? Avenatti, all the #metoo women, which turned out to be about 5? In the past two years out of hundreds of anonymous sources, and general folk, MOST have been total BS.
Hell, we've even had lots of folks, lying right to congress about various political things. Blasey Ford, just to name one?
It seems the days of the regular politics (campaign platforms where the candidate only lies about promises), are over. Now we seem to have more of a... BS the American people through every possible method, game going on.
The speed and prevalence of the internet has a lot to do with this seeming sea-change in politics. Politics has invaded, everything on the internet. It's not surprising that some folk weren't expecting these all invasive tactics and were taken in by it. Like, "yeah, well local news may be biased, but the info from the internet is sacrosanct.
Americans went through a lot of similar crap when television fist became commonplace as well. It's like everyone with a smart phone thinks they have insider information into everything.
One day, this assumption will be mostly true. When joe-everyone is a LOT better at sifting the internet for reliable information. Right now they are like babes in the woods, getting taken in by everyone.
/e Here is the latest, perfect example of what I'm trying to say...

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Twenty states have filed a motion to block President Donald Trump’s method of funding a border wall by diverting federal funds through a national emergency declaration, the New York state attorney general said on Friday.
“This wall is unnecessary, and an abuse of power that will take away resources that could be used to help Americans across our nation,” New York Attorney General Letitia James said in a Twitter post.
Declaring a national emergency IS allowed by the president, yet here we have 20 states intimating that the president is acting illegally by doing so. Ofc the fact that the states filing the motion just happen to be BLUE states, with very large numbers of illegals living there.
It's pretty much the same on the "citizenship question on the census" issue that about 16 states are up in arms about. They're making it sound like it's about keeping voters away from the polls, when in fact illegals shouldn't BE voting in the first place. Nor should states get massive amounts of Fed money or congressional seats because of massive amounts of illegals in their states.
But to hear the internet talk... in both cases, Trump and/or his administration are the bad guys, even though Trump and his administration are well within the law concerning emergency declarations and wanting illegals, out.
