I can't wait to see Trump's answer on the debate stage as to why he is refusing to release any tax returns. What a joke.
It's political calculus. Trump knows he is going to take heat and face scrutiny either way.
Either he doesn't release his tax returns, and people criticize the lack of transparency, or he does release his tax returns, and he faces the heat for whatever nasty things are in his returns.
Releasing his tax returns probably hurts him more than it helps him. If I'm his political adviser, I'd be advising him NOT to release his tax returns. He's facing one of the least transparent and trustworthy opponents in modern political history, so he can always play off that to try and reduce the criticism. He's going to take a loss either way on this subject.
But as an American, yes, it is a frustrating and blatant lack of transparency. There is undoubtedly something in Trump's tax returns that are, in his words, "not so good."
