The BLM riots throughout the summer of 2020 clearly had the purpose of changing the country's political and policy trajectory via violence (or the implicit threat thereof). And they succeeded: black turnout was supercharged and helped defeat Trump in November that year; upscale suburbanites as well as Corporate America came around to fully embrace wokism, turned on Trump and Republicans once and for all.

The BLM riots were just about as undemocratic as the storming of the Capitol - both events sought to achieve a political outcome by using violence to bypass the usual, democratic process. And both events were based on false and inflammatory narratives: Trump's claim of a 'stolen election' and BLM's claim that the United States in the year 2020 were still an "impossibly, irredeemably racist society which had barely made any true progress since the Jim Crow era". The only difference is that the grievance which set off the respective event was more justified in the case of the race riots (outrage over the murder of George Floyd) than for Jan 6 (outrage over having lost the 2020 election).

A lot of those riots involved left wing mobs storming capitol buildings and courthouses all around the nation. They laid siege to the courthouse in portland for months on end. And the nexus of democrats to the riots was a whole lot more direct, heck Hillary's running mate's son was arrested for storming a capitol building when Trump won. Per the police report, the mob he was in "employed smoke bombs, mace and fireworks, thereby creating a chaotic and dangerous situation". Two people there were charged for using tear gas against the officers at the capitol. And lo and behold, what was the charge on which Tim Kaine's son was convicted? "Obstructing a legal process". Same exact charge as the January 6th rioters, and pointedly not insurrection. And whereas January 6th rioters who just strolled casually through the capitol got years in prison in an isolated wing of political prisoners, Linwood Kaine- who had fled police and resisted arrest during the violent melee- magically got a suspended sentence and served 4 total days in jail during his processing.
The January 6th rioters were quite tame by comparison, they didn't burn a single trash can. The biggest issue was the total failure of crowd control that actually let the mob into the capitol and thereby created a lethal crowd crush at the choke points.
