Let me guess: your definition of "a strong border with a reasonable pathway to get in" probably means something along the lines of at least 1 million green card immigrants per year, plus everyone who claims to seek asylum being granted entry to the U.S., of course without any upper limit.

Americans aren't productive enough for a lot of the jobs. If Americans could be more productive, we wouldn't need so many immigrants. We already have over a million LEGAL immigrants annually so I don't know why you think a million is a lot...we're a country of 350 million people! What percent of the population do you think should be immigrant? In the US, the number is 15%. Canada is about 20%. Australia is about 30%. Singapore is 45%.

You undeniably imply that your country's "immigration system" could handle a huge influx of people coming in if only they were given legal status. Your point only makes sense if you engage in sophistry and strictly distinguish between the public side of the immigration system (border patrol, courts) on the one hand and the country at-large (housings, jobs, schools) on the other hand.

What better way to cure xenophobia and nativism than to force Americans to do the tough and shitty jobs that immigrants are currently doing for them? Americans doing these jobs at somewhat lower productivity is probably still more efficient for the country than having immigrants do these jobs and the rest of the nation then having to support millions of jobless Rust Belt heroin addicts who are a huge drag on society. It would of course be the most efficient solution of them all to deport the low productivity whites to, dunno... Mongolia? and keep the high productivity immigrants, but that's not a feasible option.

It's not about the percent of the population that's immigrant, it's about the degree of assimilation and about how many are coming in at once. 1 million per year doesn't sound too much in a country of 332m, but that's only the number of legal immigrants. When there's another 1.8 million illegals on top, that's a bit much. Keep in mind that 2% annual population growth are typical for third world countries and implies the population doubling every 35 years. Even 1% population growth per year (which is round about what the US is on track for currently) means a doubling of the population within 70 years. At some point, you run into limits on resources and favorable locations for settlements. Let's be honest: even if 2 billion people were crowded along the coasts, there would still be no one who wants to move to North Dakota.

You are doing it here as well. Right now. I never anywhere implied giving them legal status for getting here was a good thing. I said if you want a reasonable pathway to legal status Republicans aren't interested in that and they actually want them illegal so they can be abused.

There's also a phenomena where people go back to their home countries after working. When you make it impossible to come back legally and dangerous to come back illegally people tend to not do that because getting back to work is now at risk. We actually INCREASE the amount of illegals staying in our country by making border crossings unnecessarily dangerous and legal entry basically impossible
