I don't want to discuss the trial since the weaponization of the DpJ is too big a trend to focus on so narrow a thread. People who know me know I'm a free speech absolutist, but I support people being charged for damages that can be proved in court.

On Thursday, the jury found Jones should pay 4 million in Compensatory Damages. This is money to remedy the emotional distress/economic hardship caused by Jones' actions. 4 mil is a bit too much in my opinion but tolerable.

On Friday, they found Jones should pay 44 million in punitive damages. What are punitive damages? According to Bloomberg news, Cornel law dictionaries, Wikipedia, etc,, they are awarded to punish behavior.

The idea that there should be any fine that goes beyond remedying actual damages seems absurd in general. When applied to an issue of speech, it is unacceptable.
