Being trans isn't a mental illness. It's generally regarded (correctly in my view) as a disorder of sexual development. One that can come with comorbid mental illness. Just like basically any disorder. But being trans, in and of itself, is not a mental illness.

Dysphoria could be classified as mental illness but I personally think it is perfectly normal distress caused by the disorder. Do you have a mental illness if you're disgusted if you suddenly grow breasts? Nah. It can lead to mental illness (depression, anxiety etc) but I wouldn't describe the disgust you feel at the body you no longer like as being a mental illness.

So it's not a strawman. Both the pro-trans left and most medical institutions regard transness in this fashion.

Frankly the right could use a slightly better understanding of mental illness given how much untreated mental illness we see among their number. Especially the more online, dissident right types.

this narrative is just proof to me that the right is winning the war of stigmatizing mental illness. it shouldn't need to be defined with 27 qualifiers and a bunch of caveats. is there an abnormal and/or unhealthy impulse in your brain that you should attempt to treat and make less damaging to your life? if you answered yes you have a mental illness, now we can get more complicated if that fact is making you feel bad, or stigmatized, or ashamed, etc. But let's acknowledge there's something in your brain you want to work on, lets try and stop making people feel like labeling theory turns them into a pariah, and move on.

embracing mental illness is a win, playing word games is not only an L but it strengthens the GOP narrative that liberals are skirting the truth by changing definitions.

I hardly think i offered 27 qualifiers. I also don't care about stigmatisation. As if whether or not transness was a mental illness could actually stigmatise us any more than we already are.

Not all of them. You don't have to be mentally ill to be an asshole.

2. you should, trans people are MORE prone to anxiety and depression, fighting the stigma of the more common mental illnesses can only help trans people.

3. if its not a matter of further stigmatizing then why is there such a passionate battle to not be referred to as mentally ill? there's clearly an emotionally charged kneejerk reaction. being trans is more than just being mentally ill, but being mentally ill doesnt mean there's also a cure out there. that cuts both ways, going to a therapist wont make a trans person happy with their gender magically like the right wants, and going to therapy wont make many trans people magically happy if they transition either.
